On my desk: Vans OTW Larkin and Alomar

December 26, 2010

I got quite the package a few days ago from the kind folks at Vans. My friend Rickey Kim, who has played a huge inspiration for me, is currently the voice behind the Vans OTW {Off the Wall} Collection. Relatively new, the OTW range finds it way to close the gap between lifestyle and skateboarding by taking a design-forward approach. The aesthetic is modern without straying too far away from the core values of skateboarding that Vans has been synonymous with. Unlike the rest of the Vans collections, the Off the Wall advocates are, photographers, illustrators and designers.

Within the package was a pair of their slim-profile, low-cut Larkins and a pair of chukka-inspired Alomars. These are my first pairs of OTW’s and so far, the Larkins have been my daily walkers. Super comfortable and pretty much feel broken-in right out of the box. Not a bad way to start off the new year. Thanks Rickey!

Visit Vans OTW to read more about the collection and the stories shared by their advocates.

City on the Edge of Whatever by Erik Blad

“City on the Edge of Whatever” is a zine by Erik Blad. Interstellar altruism is hell on the nerves. The crew of the of NCC-1701 enjoys a break from their post-capitalist cosmos—wherever particular people congregate. Limited to 100.

Musselman Cherry Filling Poster W+K Can Drive

Sara Phillips and Paul Wig of W+K12 created these wonderful prints in support of this years Wieden+Kennedy can drive. Donations over the next few weeks will help feed those in need during the upcoming holiday season. Sara and Paul were both kind enough to float me a print to help alleviate the sparse walls of my apartment.

On my desk: Take Ivy by Teruyoshi Hayashida

Take Ivy by Teruyoshi Hayashida

Powerhouse Books has recently took the reigns in the re-release of Teruyoshi Hayashida’s Take Ivy. Originally published in 1965 for the Japanese market, Take Ivy is a sartorial account of Ivy League style. Causing quite a stir amongst Japanese traditionalists, the publication became the quintessential source-book for Japanese babyboomers looking to capture the American aesthetic.

For the first time ever, Take Ivy is available for the western market with an English translation. I purchased this book yesterday afternoon only to find out that Borders sent me a 33% off coupon that I could have used today. Owned!
