I spent a good three years working next-door to San Diego illustrator, Chris Bilyeu. In between the dead hours of his shifts, he would always fetch over some of his sketches for feedback. Here are a few of his finished pieces.
Tara Donovan at the MCASD Downtown

I had the day off today and spent my time over at the MCASD to check out the newly installed Tara Donovan exhibit. The Eternal Ruler left me a museum voucher before he moved to Japan a few months ago but I just now got around to using it. It was midday, and I pretty much had the museum all to myself (I like it that way). Upon entering the show, I was really blown away by Donovan’s appropriations of familiar objects into an artistic experience.
Stacks of plastic cups are turned into a world of organic swells, while layers of paper recreate topographical dioramas of canyons. The large-scale installations definitely create a setting that can only be experienced in person. Sometimes, the atmospheric experience is the medium, at least, this time, for me it was.
This Thursday, MCASD will be hosting their first TNT since their last, earlier this spring. Admission will be charged this time around, but I can assure you that it’ll be worth it. Mark Ramos-Nishita aka Money Mark (also the guy who plays keys on the Beastie Boys’ Ricky’s Theme) will be performing live; and that alone will be awesome. A museum membership will save you money in the long run and will even get you and a friend in for free. Get one. It’s a gift that keeps on giving.
The wall instilled with cloud-like forms (shown bellow) was entirely constructed out of straws cut in various lengths. Its pretty deceiving from a distance, since looking at it directly from a horizontal point-of-view creates a brownish cloud around your focus point. I you move parallel to the wall the cloud seems to move along with you. When you get closer, you begin to notice how important each straw is to the composition as a whole. [Did that make any sense?]
I was also able to check out the 1001 Kettner building, a portion of the MCASD, across the street. Here are a few photos.
Satoshi Hashimoto Illustrations for Monocle

Satoshi Hashimoto is one of the few selected pencil-men behind the visual atmosphere of Monocle Magazine. His work usually coincides with the issue ending Observation editorial by Tyler Brûlé, and every now and then through various briefs within the issue.
The illustration shown above is from Monocle’s November issue and is one within a series of illustrations in support of Robert Bound and Jonathan Openshaw’s musician insightful article on How to be a Band in 2010. Available now at your local newsstand.
The Type installations of Jack Pierson

Jack Pierson is a multi-medium artist known mainly for his photography and typographical compositions. These are some of his newer pieces shown at LA’s Regen Projects. His latest installation, The Show Must Go On, is currently on display at the Grand Palais Museum in Paris. Some of you may recognize his work with Japanese fashion label, SOPHNET.
The work of Todd Bratrud

Minnesota native, Todd Bratrud is an artist and self proclaimed “Bad Ass” known for his illustrations of scantily clad female types (is it wrong to be attracted to a lizard woman?). With most of his work revolving around skateboarding, his client list includes Creature, Nike, Enjoi and Consolidated Skateboards to name a few. The images shown are of some of his available prints (click the images dude). A great gift for your mother-in-law.

The images that photographer David Dobson used for these Stussy ads definitely capture the free spirited nature of their philosophy. This is good, fun and memorable branding.
Neill Orje for Raid Projects Los Angeles

My good friend Neill Orje has recently earned his way into Raid Projects’ highly regarded Artist In Residency Program. For the next couple of months, he’ll be spending his time painting between the walls of Raid Projects art space. Here, he will get to share his work with curators, critics and collectors from around the world.
This weekend, Orje’s “Afloat” will be part of the Raid Projects Group Show located at The Brewery Art Complex in Los Angeles. 2100 N. Main St., #A-9, Los Angeles, CA 90031.
The work of Stephen Alesch. The pencil before the space

These are some of the penciled visions of Stephen Alesch. As a former set-designer, Alesch is one-half of the New York based architectural design firm, Roman and Williams. These renderings play a crucial role before applying the build-outs of some of New York’s finest interiors. Their client list includes the Ace Hotel, The Standard and the Royalton Hotel. Next year, they will have their hands full while working on the iconic Hudson Hotel.
