My friend Chris Bilyeu has been really busy lately. On top of the cover art that he just did for new Plateaus LP, he just finished the two zines above. I’m not sure what they’re about, but if you into flying hamburgers, anarcho-punk and wrestling cigarettes, you’ll appreciate these latest releases. Now go check out his Instagram feed so you can add it to your NSFW folder.
Kelsey Brookes had these rad letterpress cards to giveaway at the opening for his Serotonin show. Since I really couldn’t afford to pick up any of his art, these worked just fine. On top of that, Kelsey was nice enough to sign one of them for me. That’s awesome. Don’t miss this show—It’ll be up through December 29th at the Quint.
In a not so far away life, Kelsey Brookes spent his time as a molecular biologist before deciding to quit his job and pursue a career as a full-time artist. Fortunately, it turned out pretty well for Brookes. Over the last few years, his career as an artist has kept him busy creating work for some of the world’s most respected galleries including New Image Art, Lazarides and most recently, for Quint Contemporary. His work has also found a place within the footwear and apparel industry—gracing seasonal pieces with companies such as Vans, RVCA and Insight 51. Not bad for a former scientist who used to draw on test-tube sealing cards.
Brookes’ latest show at the Quint, Serotonin; Happiness and Spiritual States, approaches some of the residual curiosities of his previous life as a scientist. Visually, the work is a play on the simplified chemical structures of various mind-altering molecules depicted in a way that you may see them during their chemical experience.
Above and below are some of the photos that I snapped from the show’s preview night where guests were treated with an artist walk-through covering the inspiration and process of the work. Amongst collectors, the Serotonin show was well received—selling through most of the pieces even before the show had officially started. Tom DeLonge and the MCASD went home with two of my favorites, LSD and Mescaline… the paintings, of course!
Serotonin; Happiness and Spiritual States runs through December 29th. If you’re in town, you should really try and check it out. Quint Contemporary Art: 7547 Girard Ave. La Jolla, CA.
