Portland’s Alberta Street. Vita Cafe, Ampersand and Together Gallery

January 30, 2011

One of the best things about Portland is the abundance of great places to grab a bite to eat. My friend Mark had the day off and recommended that we grab brunch at Vita Cafe. Mark used to live in San Diego and shared the same building with my friend Alyasha before moving here to Portland a few years ago with his lovely wife, Brynne. We unexpectedly ran into each other at an art show during the first week that I started wk12. Since then, he’s been kind enough to show me around the city on the days that I’m not in the office (which are few!). With the weather being permitting as it has these last few days, it was nice to take advantage of some of the rainless opportunities to check out a few new spots.

After finishing up at Vita Cafe, we walked a few blocks west to check out a few shops. Our first stop was at Ampersand, a shop that carried a great selection of vintage, hand-picked ephemera made up of postcards, pamphlets and photographs. Their book selection was also well stocked—including both new and used volumes primarily focused on art, design and photography. A copy of David Gates’ Type caught my eye and I’m thinking about picking it up on my next visit. Dibs.

Our next stop, Together Gallery, was just one door away. On display was the Family Quilt, Together Gallery’s 3rd annual winter group show. All the pieces within the exhibition were painted on square canvases and displayed in quilt-like fashion. Next month, Josh Kenyon & Colby Nichols (Jolby) along with Rachel Roellke, will be showing The King’s 6th Finger—which would mark the release of their new children’s book (of the same name) and it’s original artwork. Mark your calendar.

On my desk: “Sleep Forever” 7-inch by the Crocodiles

January 28, 2011

With the sun finally starting to peek out of its winter slumber—these last few days in Portland have actually been pretty nice. I picked up this single at the Crocodiles show last week at the Doug Fir. It was nice to get a little bit of home just a few blocks away from my apartment. For those in San Diego, be sure to check out their show this Saturday at the Casbah.

Driving through Big Sur to find your inner Kerouac is so necessary. Find two friends and a good playlist and just go for it. The other day, my friend Vince sent me these photos that he took during the drive. One of the most memorable trips that I have ever taken.
