Kristján Gudmundsson at Quint Contemporary Art in La Jolla
February 10, 2010Kristján Gudmundsson’s work is defined by the essential, both in form and concept – working as he describes “within the tension that exists between nothing and something.”
I made my way to the Quint Gallery in La Jolla to visit Kristján Gudmundsson’s Paintings in Gray and White Frames exhibition. I wasn’t able to attend the opening last week and thought that it would be a perfect day to visit since the weather wasn’t cooperating. In this exhibition, Gudmundsson studies the ranging values between grey and white using a collection of mass-manufactured perforated grids. The varying diameters of the perforations, from a distance, create different values of grey to the viewer’s eye. Have a look!
This is the always insightful, Ben Strauss-Malcolm, Gallery Director at the Quint. He was kind enough to float me a copy of Ryan McGinness’ Arkitip issue. He revealed that installation artist, Robert Irwin, will be showing at the Quint beginning March 19. Care to join me anyone?

February 10, 2010Thanks Mr. Ben Strauss-Malcolm. Be sure to visit the Quint Gallery in La Jolla to check out the Kristján Gudmundsson before it ends! Robert Irwin exhibition begins March 19th.

February 9, 20102K By Gingham Art Show: 2THEWALL at New Image Art Los Angeles
February 9, 2010The graphics shown above were done by Steph Walker, a good friend (and an amazing designer!), for 2K by Gingham. Starting February 20th, she will be showing at New Image Art Gallery in Los Angeles as they host 2K’s first US Exhibition and Pop-Up Shop. The inaugural exhibition, entitled 2THEWALL, is dedicated to the artists that have collaborated with 2K by Gingham during their 12-year history. The show will also feature original artwork by some of my favorite artists/designers including Milton Glaser, Barry McGee and Andy Meuller.
Runs through March 2nd. Please visit New Image Art for more info.

February 8, 2010Niederfrank’s Ice Cream in National City. Since 1948
February 7, 2010Niederfrank’s is a National City institution. Since 1948, they have been the mecca for those looking for the best ice cream offerings in San Diego. For over 60 years, they’ve maintained an everything made on premises policy using all-natural ingredients. I had the pleasure of enjoying a cup of their French Vanilla… and it was damn good.
On my desk: Atelier Ciseaux #06 & Black Iris 005. Best Coast/Jeans Wilder
February 7, 2010I picked up these two records at the Vivian Girls/Best Coast/Dunes show at the Casbah last Thursday. Both are sold out online so I’m pretty happy that I was able to pick them up. Fun!
I want a house in Rolando Village. San Diego, CA
February 6, 2010I was watching the local news last night and got a late pass on discovering the simple beauty of San Diego’s Rolando Village. This neighborhood is right out of a black-and-white 50′s sitcom… but in color. As described by Jim D. Newland, Rolando was “named after the rolling topography of the land—with a popular 1920s ‘Spanish-style’ linguistic twist”. During the early development of Rolando Village, it was touted to be San Diego’s version of what Hollywood living is to Los Angeles. Click the images to make them larger.
