The Converse One Star ’74 Collection. Back in form.
October 12, 2009Amongst a sea of timeless classics made by Converse, the One Star seemed to hide behind the spotlight and make way for both the Chuck Taylor and Jack Purcell. Unless you lived in Japan, where sneakers seem to dodge misguided reproduction methods, your most recent memory of the One Star may come through their Target collection. And even before that, the Converse One Star found itself branded with an overbearing gold foil stamp.
Until a few days ago, Converse had stayed relatively quiet about their US plans with the One Star. As an exclusive release through the Converse website, you can now order the One Star in 6 colorways. No added details, just plain, solid suede variations. Just the way we like them.
Word is, that there will be a BLENDS colorway releasing within the next few weeks. So for those of you in LA, Costa Mesa and San Diego, hold on tight. Things will be good.
On my desk: Dad’s Style Magazine & Camp Socks
October 12, 2009If you like knives, muscle cars and America, you will enjoy this special edition from Free & Easy Magazine. I got a great deal on this issue while making my weekly trek to Book-Off; a local, Japanese used-book store. Radness. To the right are Camp Socks that I bought earlier today from J.Crew. Made in Vermont, ‘The Green Mountain State’. USA! USA! USA!
Today I made a trip to ‘The Best Damn Beer Shop’ in San Diego
October 12, 2009Naming yourself The Best Damn Beer Shop in America’s Finest City is a pretty tough title to withhold. After reading Men’s Journal (my bible) crown San Diego as the ‘Best Beer Town of America’, I found myself geeking out within Beer Advocate’s San Diego Beer Guide. It was here that I stumbled upon the relatively new bottle shop located in Downtown San Diego.
Less than a mile away from my apartment, the coveted beer wall at TBDBS nestles itself within Super Junior Market, right off 7th and Broadway. Here you’ll find a great selection of craft brews from Stone, Russian River, Dogfishhead, Ale Smith and Port Brewing to name a few. They’ve only been around for about 3 months, but have already built a strong following amongst fellow hop heads. They also sell a good selection of Belgiums, if you’re into that sorta thing. 1036 7th Ave. San Diego, CA 92101. Respect yourself. Drink responsibly.

October 10, 2009San Diego beer is awesome
October 6, 2009Men’s Journal rates San Diego as the #1 beer town in the good ol’ USA. As a member of Failures Beer Club, we couldn’t agree more. Other notable beer cities included NYC, Portland, Philadelphia and Chicago. Here are some of my favorite local brews that I recommend.
Stone’s Arrogant Bastard, Ballast Point’s Sculpin, Stone’s Old Guardian, Russian River’s Pliny the Elder (I know, but its got Temecula roots) and Port Brewing’s HOP-15 Ale.
My roommate and I have built quite a lineup of bottles.
On my desk: Wonderwall Inc & Monocle Magazine
October 5, 2009I bought this month’s Monocle while grabbing my lunch earlier today. These days, its a very hard commitment to buy printed matter in the age of digital media. But its different with Monocle. My friend Vince put me on this magazine a few years back and I’ve been hooked ever since. Everything from the dimensions, the paper, the fonts and the tasteful coverage of world affairs is on point… shoot, even the advertisements add to the publication’s aesthetic (seriously!?!). The music section is always really good, but I wish they would write more. But I guess there’s a zillion other places for that.
Wonderwall Inc is one of my favorite interior design firms. Masamichi Katayama has been responsible for creating retail spaces for Marc Jacobs, Sony, Beams and one time cult-label, A Bathing Ape. Earlier today, I stumbled upon their newly designed site. It took some time to get used to it, but once mastered, the navigation is smooth. Looks spectacular. Go check it out.
Below are a few Wonderwall-designed spaces. Negative space is a plus!
Spike Jonze: The First 80 Years. Spike Who!?! Spike Joooonze!
October 4, 2009Beginning next week, MoMA’s Department of Film will be exhibiting, The First 80 Years, a retrospective exhibition celebrating the work of Spike Jonze. Part of MoMa’s Filmmaker in Focus series, the show will be held on October 8, 2009–October 18, 2009. Spike’s broad spectrum as a filmmaker spans from his earlier projects working on BLIND Skateboard’s Video Days; and to his more recent projects including Maurice Sendak’s live-action rendition of Where The Wild Things Are. The October 8th opening will hold a live discussion panel with Maurice Sendak and exhibition curator Joshua Siegel.
To close the exhibition, PopRally will be hosting An Evening of Skate Videos curated by Patrick O’dell. Jonze reveals, “Skate videos have been a big influence and a big part of what I’ve done for a long time. They are how I got into film, actually.” This unique screening is followed by a conversation with legendary skateboarders and filmmakers, including Jonze, Lance Mountain, Greg Hunt, Jake Phelps, Ty Evans, and other surprise guests. Afterwards, a special performance by NO AGE.

Below is a Spike Jonze-directed short starring a dance-driven Mark Gonzales. I first saw this film in Tokyo while attending the Spike Jonze Rarities panel at ResFest 2003. The film is a romantic, funny and quirky piece that takes an unexpected turn of events. It’s a bummer, but watch it anyway because its radical.
2 hours of Summer at the Che Cafe, 12 hours ago. Yellow and Red
October 3, 2009Its a shame that these were the only two images that came out even half good from last night’s show. I need to figure out a better configuration for low-light settings.
Some videos. Sorry about the lack of light. My camera isn’t that awesome.
Neill Orje invented this yellow. This piece isn’t done yet. He told me that this piece is ‘going to be a little different’. Neill’s also got a few new paintings up on his site. Have a look.
A nice red wall. Too bad these cronies got in the way.
Tonight, The ‘Summer of 09′ returns to the Che Cafe
October 2, 2009Tonight will be one of those shows that people will talk about 15 years from now. But why talk about it when you can see it live tonight? You won’t want to miss this. Starts fairly early so you’ll just have enough time to make the Ketsana Typhoon Fundraiser right after the show. Only $7 and its all ages too so no excuses. Below are some samples of what you’ll be hearing tonight. Click the images to listen.
The birthday of Willy M. Santos
October 2, 2009Last night, I made the trek up to Poway Fun Bowl for Willy’s Birthday. Here he is above with Mr. Mira Mesa. Mr. Mira Mesa is a north county legend. He even has his own deck.
Short story. A couple years back Willy called me up on my birthday asking if had any plans. Really not big on planning my own birthdays, I hadn’t taken any time to make any. Later that night, Willy was kind enough to throw me an impromptu shindig with me and some friends, letting me beat everyone at Street Fighter II. How rad is that?
