The work of Stephen Alesch. The pencil before the space
October 22, 2009These are some of the penciled visions of Stephen Alesch. As a former set-designer, Alesch is one-half of the New York based architectural design firm, Roman and Williams. These renderings play a crucial role before applying the build-outs of some of New York’s finest interiors. Their client list includes the Ace Hotel, The Standard and the Royalton Hotel. Next year, they will have their hands full while working on the iconic Hudson Hotel.
Wavves at the Market Hotel in Brooklyn NY
October 21, 2009Some good footy of San Diego’s Wavves, playing Brooklyn’s Market Hotel last September. NW on the mic and Zach Hill doing some illegal drumming. The full set is available here on Baeble. The link may take a while, but it’s worth it. Real Talk.
BLENDS x Converse 1HUND(RED) One Star release reception in San Diego
October 21, 2009For those who may not know, I work for the San Diego chapter of the sneaker/lifestyle shop, BLENDS. Tomorrow, October 22nd at 7PM, we will be releasing our collaborative project with the Converse 1HUND(RED) Artists program. The Converse One Star is one of my ALL TIME favorite sneakers and I was definitely excited to hear that we would be working on them for this important cause. 726 Market St. San Diego, 92101. 619-233-6126
The shoe was designed and conceptualized by Tak Kato and Mike Toe, co-owners and creative minds behind BLENDS. Please join us tomorrow evening at 7PM for our release reception. There will be free drinks available along with music provided by JULZ of MINDZALIKE. For more details, please feel free to call the shop, and/or CLICK HERE.
Receptions will also be held at the Costa Mesa and Los Angeles locations on October 23rd and 24th respectively. A global release at select retailers will also be made soon after.
Tara Donovan in San Diego via MCASD Downtown
October 19, 2009Starting this weekend, the MCASD Downtown will host Tara Donovan’s first major museum survey. This particular installation shown above was made out of styrofoam cups and hot glue. When I was younger, I used to make styrofoam skulls by taking cups and tearing out eyes and mouths. Donovan’s work is much better than that. Check it out this weekend and see for yourself. Oct 25, 2009–Feb 28, 2010 at MCASD Downtown, Jacobs Building
Donovan uses prosaic items including electrical cable, adding machine paper, straight pins, paper plates, and toothpicks. These materials are arranged in a manner that sometimes mimics the organization of geological or biological forms. Part of the intrigue of Donovan’s practice lies in the way she is able to present a mass of unaltered, simple objects that do not disguise what they are while simultaneously suggesting a range of richly poetic associations.

October 18, 2009Illustrator Jacques Floret for APC
October 17, 2009A while back, I took some scans of the A.P.C. denim guide/catalog. Rather than the usual topographical product shots, A.P.C. took an alternative route by commissioning french artist, Jacques Floret, to illustrate their range of available fits. The stroke heavy illustrations capture a warm and simple aesthetic that the label seems to live by. And that’s A.P.C., short for Atelier des Production et Creation.
Minutes at the Salk Institute & a visit to BLENDS/CARVE Costa Mesa
October 16, 2009This is the Salk Institute in La Jolla California. The facility was built in honor of Jonas Salk, a famed medical researcher known for his development of the polio vaccine. I was able to take a few photos earlier today right before they closed down visiting hours. Didn’t get any good angles, but I’ll definitely be back with a better camera and maybe even a sunset.
Designed and completed between 1959 and 1964 by architect, Louis Kahn.
Shortly after, I made my way north for a staff meeting at BLENDS/CARVE Costa Mesa. Some collaborative projects coming soon with Converse and Ralph Lauren’s RRL Collection. Our Converse One Star will be released on October 24th. More details to be announced soon.
Speaking of RRL, CARVE has just received a new shipment of some of their Fall/Winter Collection. Items included a series of oxford shirts (selvedge gussets!), chinos, cords and their coveted 03B-SF denim jeans. Should be on shelves any minute.
